TSC To Promote Primary School Teachers With Degrees to Jss.Teachers Service commission (TSC ) has announced plans to appreciate primary school teachers who have upgraded their PTE certificates to diploma and degree to be promoted to junior secondary in the forthcoming mass recruitment early next year.
The Commission has already received applications for various categories of teacherssince it announced over 35,000 positions to curb teacher shortage across the country as promiaed by Ruto’s Government during campaigns in August.
Junior secondary school which will be domiciled in existing primary schools needs atleast 60,000 teachers to Handles grade 7 learners as from 2023 january.
Starting January TSC will recruit 30,550 teachers for junior secondary school.
Out of these recruitment,9,000 positions are permanent and pensionable terms for post primary teachers who will be posted in junior secondary school .As per the latest tsc recruitment roadmap,majority of Interns will be absorb .
21,550 posts is for secondary school teachers but on intern terms.Employment Interviews are scheduled as the year starts and qualified candidates will be posted before the schools open in January 23th.
In his meeting with national assembly committee on education and research few days ago.TSC chairperson Mr Jamleck Maina together with head of legal affairs Mr.Calvin Anyuor assured the the committee that robust plans are underway to deploy primary school teachers to junior secondary.
Mr Anyuor,insisted that indeed plans to deploy teachers with upgraded certificates on primary schools will be Promoted to teach in junior secondary schools together with high school teachers.
As per the TSC database ,over 17,000 primary teachers are qualified to teach in junior secondary but they promised to table the confirmed numbers once mapping is over.
The Chairperson also retaliated that all these teachers have degrees and Diplomas from recognized institutions of higher learning.
The primary teachers union of primary teachers(KNUT) has been hellbent on the TSC to consider its members in junior secondary school by lowering the teaching grade.But the commission insists only teachers with qualifications to teach in secondary schools will be allowed in junior secondary.

However,the commission is pressured by KNUT and other education stakeholders to retool teacher with the following qualifications in order to enable them handle junior secondary school.
1)Degree and diploma teachers in special education(SNE)
2)Degree and diploma in Early Childhood education(ECD)
3)Degree and diploma in education ( Primary option)
4)Degree and diploma (secondary option)
5) Degree in education (secondary option) but without C+ in teaching subjects or in KCSE results.
The deployment and promotion of primary school teachers to junior secondary was necessitated by the fact that TSC will only allocate a single teachers to every domicile class.
This communicates that every primary school will receive number of teachers based number of domicile classes it has ,number of learners notwithstanding.
Mr.anyuor confirmed to the education committee ,there 30,550 grade 7 complete classes in the country.TSC will allocate one teacher to each one of them.
“Every school in all 47 counties will have a single teacher ,if the county has 300 primary schools then it will receive 300 junior secondary teachers.”
Mr.Jamleck further said the commission is only operating on the budget allocated by treassury but retooling of primary school teachers will be rolling out as from next year.
the training of grade seven teachers will involve subjects and areas offered in junior secondary schools.They Include:
I)Languages: Kenya Sign Language, English, Kiswahili, and other foreign and indigenous languages.
ii) Mathematics
iii. Pure Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Health Education
iv. Applied Sciences: Home Science, Agriculture, and Computer Studies
V. Humanities: social studies (citizenship, geography, and history), religious studies (CRE, IRE, Hindu, HRE, and PPI), and practical skills.
Vi)Business studies, music, sports and physical education, and home science are technical subjects and the creative arts for pre-vocational and pre-career students.
