TSC News on Payslip. The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) and the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) recommends the creation of an independent body with the responsibility of handling teacher disciplinary issues.
The Union claims that hearing and decision making on matters discipline issues is rigorous and time consuming.
On February 21, KUPPET and KNUT spoke before the Education Committee, requesting that the National Assembly review and modify the Teachers Service Act to take their recommendations into account.
According to KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu, Teachers want an independent disciplinary body to Serve as a tribunal since when it comes to displinary and dismissal issues they’re ever alone.
NEW SALARY INCREASE FOR TEACHERS
Furthermore, the unions said that the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) did not permit discussion during compensation discussions and that numerous teachers had complains about it.
According to KUPPET SG Akello Misori, “SRC brought in a circular two weeks before the start of discussions, and that circular removed all power from the employer.”
“At one point, we were told that we were persona non grata because of our moral character. And we bring a lot of opposition,” Omboko Milemba, the head of KUPPET, says.
However, the committee claimed that the unions voluntarily agreed to a non-financial collective bargaining agreement for the years 2021–2025, which led to the problems that teachers were claiming to be suffering.
According to Phylis Jepkemoi, “Teachers are face so many difficulties, but they are seen as face of unions, to the point that some even feel that it is better not to be a union member.”
TSC News on Payslip ,TEACHERS RETIREMENT BENEFITS
Further, the unions demands that the National Assembly modify the Pension Act so that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) rather than the National Treasury would be in control of the retired teachers.
Oyuu argues that if TSC mandates is employment and payment of teachers, why not handle matters retirements for the same clients?
For the purpose of paying out the money to retired teachers, TSC had already filed pensions with the Ministry of Treasury and Planning.
All retirees evaluates their status for the pension program as per TSC Circular on February 3.
